Uniform and Dress Code Policy (P3)

Staff working within Derbyshire Community Health Services (DCHS) NHS Foundation Trust are required to adhere to a safe, hygienic and appropriate uniform and dress code policy. Therefore the purpose of this policy is to clarify the standards that staff are required to comply with. DCHS recognises the importance of appearance and attire in providing a professional image when working with clients and representing the Trust. All staff working clinically or visiting a clinical area have a responsibility for safeguarding patients in respect of reducing hospital acquired infections, therefore all clinical staff should adhere to the best practice guidelines as set by the Department of Health’s Best Practice Guidelines found in Uniforms and Work Wear DOH March 2010, An Evidence Base for Developing a Local Policy (DH)

Child Visiting Policy (P18)

The aim of this policy is to provide a process for staff when facilitating visits by a child/ren to (Derbyshire Community Health Services FT) DCHS inpatient and day case services, including services where patients are detained under the Mental Health Act (1983). Maintaining effective family contact and dynamics has been shown to often be crucial for a full recovery for people with mental health problems. Health professionals must be aware that the needs of the child come first, and they must not be put at significant risk of harm. Working Together to Safeguard Children (2018) sets out how organisations and individuals should work together to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people in accordance with Section 11 of the Children Act 2004. All health professionals and organisations have a key role to play in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Many DCHS services do not directly work with children; staff working within these services may indirectly become involved in the welfare of child visitors as part of their daily case management.

Advance Decisions Policy

It is a general principle of law and medical practice that adults have a right to consent to or refuse treatment. The courts have recognised that adults have the right to say in advance that they want to refuse treatment if they lose capacity in the future, even if this results in their death. A valid and applicable advance decision to refuse treatment has the same force as a contemporaneous decision. This has been a fundamental principle of the common law for many years and is now set out in the Mental Capacity Act 2005, which came into force in 2007 supported by the Code of Practice to the Act. Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust aims to achieve a more balanced partnership between patients and healthcare professionals and acknowledges that it is the right of every adult patient with capacity to determine whether or not to accept medical treatment. In addition, it is the right of every adult patient to express views about their future care and treatment. The primary responsibility lies with the patient (the maker) to write an Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment (ADRT). The Trust endorses the good practice of staff, set out in national guidance and professional standards to provide information to and general support for patients who wish to write an ADRT. The Trust always encourages patients who wish to discuss their plans for future care and will provide advice to patients and support to advance care planning by helping to coordinate care and communicate plans. In addition, it is supportive of those patients who present with an advance decision and where this is valid and applicable, comply with that specific decision. This policy should be read in conjunction with the Trust’s Consent Policy and aims to raise awareness and give guidance to staff about advance decisions.
