I need urgent help

If you feel your life is at risk right now:

If you are actively suicidal or have seriously harmed yourself:

  • Call 999 and ask for an ambulance
If someone you know:
  • is having active suicidal thoughts
  • feels unsafe
  • has seriously harmed themselvees and needs medical attention

Call 999 or take them straight to A&E.


If your life or that of another is not at serious risk:

  • Call 111 (England and Wales)
  • Call your local urgent mental health helpline
  • Make an emergency appointment with your GP
    • If you feel able to tell the receptionist that this is about your mental health, it can help you to get the right support

Mental health emergencies are serious and seeking help for them is not time wasting.


If you are finding it hard to cope and want to talk to someone:

  • Call Samaritans on 116 123 - this is a freephone number

  • Text the word 'SHOUT' to 85258 for free confidential, 24/7 text messaging support

  • Call PAPYRUS on their free helpline called HOPELINE UK on 0800 068 4141

    • The charity is for people under 35 and you can also call them if you are concerned about a young adult or child

  • Email SANEline at support@sane.org.uk for out-of-hours mental health support

  • Call CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) for men on 0800 585 858

    • This is a freephone number and the lines are open from 5pm until midnight every day

  • Download the Stay Alive App on Apple Store or Google Play for Android

    • The app has a lot of useful information on how to stay safe and includes helpline numbers for your local areas
