Across the NHS, including here at DCHS, we’re facing rising costs on every front – from the price of medical supplies to the soaring cost of electricity, heating, and water. These increases are putting significant financial pressure on our Trust and the wider health system.
Every pound spent on wasted energy is a pound not available for frontline care, staff support, or critical services.
That’s why we all have a part to play. Simple actions in your daily routine can save thousands of pounds across the Trust. These savings protect patient care and help us direct our limited resources where they’re needed most. This isn’t just about saving energy – it’s about protecting the future of the NHS.
Small changes add up fast; here are some easy ways to reduce energy use in your workplace:
- Switch off lights in empty rooms or spaces not in use. At the end of the day, do a quick check before leaving.
- Shut down computers and monitors rather than leaving them on standby – it adds up to thousands in wasted electricity each year.
- Unplug chargers and equipment that aren’t needed – many still draw power when not in use.
- Use heaters and fans sparingly and turn them off when no longer needed.
- Boil only what you need in the kettle – doing this Trust-wide could save hundreds.
- Make use of natural daylight and turn off unnecessary lights.
- Keep fridge and freezer doors closed – protecting energy and supplies.
- Report any issues like dripping taps, rooms that are too hot, broken light timers, or faulty equipment (Email: dchst.estateshelpdesk@nhs.net or visit: DCHS Estates Help)
