World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is taking place on 10 September
This year's theme is Change the Narrative on Suicide with the call to action being Start the Conversation. The aim is to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicide. By having these all-important conversations, we can break down barriers, raise awareness and find ways to support each other.
Everyone can make a difference. We can all help to prevent suicide by starting open and honest discussions with our friends, colleagues and family members.
- Why not spend 30 minutes completing the Zero Suicide Alliance training which is now available on ESR? This short training aims to give you the skills and confidence to support someone who may be considering suicide - you could potentially help to save a life
- Why not take a look at our Suicide Prevention intranet page? You’ll find lots of information and resources to help you feel more prepared to support someone who may be struggling
- Why not request a suicide awareness session for your team? These sessions last approximately one hour and cover risk factors for suicide, spotting the signs of suicidal ideation and how you can help. If you wish to book a session for your team at a time that suits you, please get in touch with Wendy Hodgkinson
- Why not take action as a service? If you want to develop your service or team to take a suicide prevention approach, contact Caroline Savidge.
Or why not get involved with some of our activities this year?
There will be pop-up stalls throughout September and October in the following locations across the Trust:
- Whitworth Hospital – Tuesday 16 September 2-4pm
- Ripley Hospital – Tuesday 23 September 1.30-3.30pm
- Ilkeston Hospital – Tuesday 25 September 11.30am-2pm
- Buxton Hospital – Thursday 2 October 10.30am-1pm
We will also be at Cathedral Green in Derby on Saturday 13 September from 12-7.30pm, where the UK’s largest suicide prevention initiative is running an event. It’s a day to celebrate and raise awareness of the many organisations and people who support suicide prevention. We look forward to seeing you there.
Come along and find out what support is available locally.
