Information for all clinical managers – bedrail and bed area equipment prescriber training.

Following the national patient safety alert August 2023 regarding bed rails and bed area equipment (NatPSA/2023/010/MHRA), a face to face training package, 842 Bedrails & Bed Area Equipment Level 2 Prescriber Training, has been developed for DCHS staff. This is aimed at all staff who may prescribe, review, and/or authorise prescription of bed rails and/or bed levers/sticks/grab handles, and is in addition to the eLearning, 842 Safe use of Bedrails. Courses are currently being offered for staff at Walton, St Oswald’s and Cavendish hospitals. Booking is via ESR, following completion of the eLearning.

Following successful piloting and development, this training will show as a mandatory requirement on some ESR profiles from 3rd February. Although we have done our best to identify only those staff groups who require this competency, there may be some who feel this does not apply to them. If you feel this competency has been assigned in error, please get in touch with the Patient Manual Handling Team.

Although this training is mainly aimed at B5+ staff, there may be instances where B3 or B4 staff review bed levers/sticks/grab handles as part of their role. These staff members will also need to complete this training.
